Early Literacy Programs

The Ipswich Public Library offers opportunities for children to hear stories from classic children’s literature and also from newer additions to the library’s children’s book collection.  The children have the opportunity to practice skills such as listening, following directions and taking turns in a friendly, nurturing environment.  Story Time and Mother Goose on the Loose programs are held throughout the week with programs designed for specific ages.

The early literacy programs at the library provide a venue for parents and caregivers to meet new people in their community.  It is a wonderful opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to spend time together.

Story Time options during the school year:

Story Time for children from age 4 through Kindergarten is held on Mondays from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m.  This offers a great chance for the children to catch up with their preschool friends.  Children attend this program independently.

At the Story Time program for children ages 2 to 4, which meets on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. participants attend with a caregiver.  Adults interact with the child in their care while listening to stories, singing songs, and participating in large motor skill activities, including a parachute, and creating a simple craft.

The Transitional Story Time for children ages 2 and 3, or those new to a Story Time format, is held on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m.  Similar to the Wednesday Story Time this program incorporates lots of finger plays and visual arts.

Mother Goose on the Loose for caregivers with infants to age 2, meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10 a.m. throughout the year, including the summer months.  Mother Goose includes music, rhymes, puppets and, of course, books for caregivers to enjoy with the library’s littlest patrons.  Babes in arms and toddlers who are just moving forward are the best audience for this program.

For all of the Early Literacy programming, older and younger siblings are always welcome.

The first Wednesday of every month at 10:30 a.m. the library offers Music for the Little Ones with Eric Clemenzi.  Singing and dancing for the young and the young at heart.

Elementary School programs during the school year include a monthly Craft Program and many Book Clubs that meet monthly.  These are book groups for children who love to read and talk about books with their peers.  Registration is required for Book Clubs.
